CY TWOMBLY PAVILION

In 1992, RPBW was commissioned by Dominique de Menil to build a small, independent pavilion dedicated to the work of Cy Twombly in the grounds of the Menil Collection. Standing among the Menil’s surrounding bungalows, the Twombly Gallery had to have architectural and visual autonomy, while at the same time fitting in with the adjacent Menil Collection.
The Cy Twombly Gallery is built of Menil-gray-coloured block concrete. It is square in plan and it contains nine galleries.
Like the main museum, it is lit through the roof, but here with an external canopy of louvers, shading the sloping, hipped glass roof, below which a fabric ceiling diffuses the light, giving a reduced intensity of around 300 lux.
